The National Dog Show is an event organised by the Pro Loco of Poggio a Caiano, in collaboration with C.S.A.A. (Centro Sport Attività Ambientali) and the Gruppo Cinofilo Croce d'Oro of Prato, under the patronage of the Province of Prato and the Municipalities of Poggio a Caiano, Montemurlo, Vernio, Vaiano and Cantagallo.
Open to all breeds and valid for selection towards the Regional Championship, the Italian Championship and also the Absolute Championship, the dog show is held at the "Il Magnifico" Equestrian Centre
located within the Parco delle Cascine di Tavola; the entrance is from Poggio a Caiano, at via Roma 592.
The Poggio dog show is part of a broad calendar of events that begins in March and runs through September across the whole of Tuscany.
The programme of the day is generally structured as follows: from 8.30am to 10am, registration and admission of the dogs will open; at 10am the individual judging will begin without delay and continue until completed.
At 3pm, judging of the groupings will take place instead (Herding breeds; Guard breeds; Utility breeds; Terriers and Dachshunds; Continental pointing breeds; English pointing breeds; Spaniels, Retrievers, Lagotto; Companion breeds; Scent hounds, Sighthounds; Primitive Nordic breeds) along with the Best in Show awards (Best in Show Overall, Best Group, Best Couple, Best Newcomer, Best Junior, Best Intermediate, Best of Breed, Best of Groups and Gatherings, Best Champion). For the Special Groupings: Best Mixed Breed, Best Young Handlers (mini, ages 4 to 8, and maxi, ages 9 to 14).
The classes and participation fees are as follows: Champions (for dogs that have achieved C.S.A.A. champion status), Working Class (for dogs that have obtained a "Very Good" in trials organised by C.S.A.A.), Veterans (for dogs over 8 years old), Open (for dogs at least 18 months old), Intermediate (for dogs between 12 and 17 months old), Junior (for dogs between 8 and 11 months old), Puppy (for dogs between 3 and 7 months old), Couple (for a male and female of the same breed), Group (for three or more dogs of both sexes belonging to the same breed).
Registration requires a document proving the dog's age and its health record booklet. A C.S.A.A. membership card and performance booklet are mandatory. Exhibitors entering at least 3 dogs in the individual class will be entitled to free registration of the couple and/or group. In the Veterans and Amateur classes, the competition will be limited to the technical assessment (written report) and the award of a merit prize: there will be no final grouping by category.
All dogs, male and female, classified in their respective classes as per the programme, will take part in the Gatherings (Special Doberman "Memorial Roy"). The overall best dog of the Show will receive a weekend away for two.
Veterinary service and a refreshment service organised by the Pro Loco will also be provided.
